Finally, a good excuse to not shave for three months! Grow a beard and win!  The annual Grubstake Days Beard Growing Contest begins Tuesday, March 1^st for those in the New Beard competition.  Prizes will be awarded on May 28^th for the best overall, longest beard, thickest beard, best groomed, most original, best mustache and best effort.

New Beard contestants must register Tuesday between 7:30am and 5:30pm at the Yucca Valley Community Center.  The contest is open to all ages; there is no fee to enter.  Contestants must be clean shaven when registering. The Town of Yucca Valley’s Community Services Department staff will take a photo of each registrant to verify a fair start and for comparison at the end of the competition.  Judging for new and existing beards will take place during the Grubstake Days Community Fair that will be held at the Yucca Valley Community Center.

As part of the Town of Yucca Valley’s annual Earth Day celebration, local residents are invited to contribute artwork made from recycled and reused materials for display in the Hi-Desert Nature Museum’s  ”Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” art exhibition.  Paintings, sculpture, mixed media creations, photographs of recycled products, or any other art-related objects can be loaned to the museum for display in the exhibition.  Individual and group projects are welcome and children are highly encouraged to participate.  Guidelines for the submittal of artwork are available at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum during operating hours or on the museum’s web site www.hidesertnaturemuseum.org. The Town of Yucca Valley’s recreation staff has issued its annual challenge to whisker growers to sign up for the 2011 Grubstake Days Beard Contest.   The competition will feature opportunities to prevail in any of several categories in both Division A (New Beards) and Division B (Existing Beards).  Judging will take place at the Grubstakes Community Fair on Saturday, May 28^th.
