On January 18, The Town of Yucca Valley awarded the architectural and engineering design contract for the much anticipated Aquatics and Recreation Center to HMC Architects. Thanks to Assemblyman Mayes, the funding for this project stems from a state general obligation fund that provides assistance for drought, water, parks, climate, coastal protection, and outdoor access for all programs.
“Awarding the design contract marks an exciting milestone in the project’s progress,” says Mayor Jim Schooler. “We know Town staff and residents alike look forward to the addition of the Aquatics and Recreation Center, which will greatly benefit our community’s health, wellness and recreation needs.”
Town Council received 13 bids for the project’s design, with HMC ultimately being recommended as the best fit for the Town by the Town’s Evaluation Committee. “HMC Architects’ local approach was clearly in line with our Town’s goals for the Aquatic and Recreation Center. HMC Architects + Aquatic Design Group have completed more indoor aquatic projects together than any team in Southern California,” says Town Manager Curtis Yakimow.
As stated in the Request for Proposal (RFP), HMC Architects’ five main priorities are maintaining the project’s budget, adhering to a timely schedule, improving the health and wellness of Yucca Valley residents, creating an iconic building reflective of Yucca Valley, and minimizing operational costs through sustainable architecture.
The Town anticipates architectural design work in 2022, construction to begin in 2023, and with the grand opening slated for 2024.
The Town’s Aquatics and Recreation Project was made possible through a grant funded by the Parks and Water Bond Act passed by California voters in 2018 (Prop 68). The Town is grateful for Assemblymember Chad Mayes tireless efforts in developing the funding possibility through Prop 68
