Organics Recycling is coming to the Town of Yucca Valley next month, as required by California Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383). Under SB 1383, all California cities and counties are required to implement organics recycling by providing organic waste collection services for all residents and businesses with the goals of reducing organic waste sent to landfills by 75% and recovering surplus edible food to feed Californians facing food insecurity.
The Town of Yucca Valley, in partnership with the Town’s trash hauler, Burrtec, will launch the Town’s Organics Recycling Program to all Yucca Valley residents and businesses in January 2024. Under SB 1383, all food waste, yard trimmings, and other organic materials will need to be separated from the regular trash and either composted or used for energy generation. Organic waste includes food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste and non-hazardous wood waste.
- Examples of green waste include: landscape waste, tree trimmings, branches, leaves, grass clippings and weeds.
- Examples of food waste include: eggshells, meats, bones, fruits & vegetables, dairy, bread, coffee grounds & filters, tea bags, plate scrapings and food-soiled paper (i.e., napkins and paper towels).
Once residents and businesses receive their new green carts or bins in January, begin using them immediately. Green waste and food waste materials will no longer go into the trash container. Instead, put food waste into a plastic bag, secure it, and place it into the green cart, on top of any loose (not bagged) green waste. Green organics carts and bins will be picked up on regular trash days, along with the trash and recycling carts.
